Arthritis is any inflammation of the joints.
Osteoarthritis is the most common kind - this is caused by wearing of the bones.
Rheumatoid arthritis is when your immune system attacks your joints for some reason.
Arthritis means inflammation of the joint.. rheumatoid arthritis is one type of arthritis (there are others such as osetoarthritis)
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) a chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder that may affect many tissues and organs, but principally attacks the joints producing an inflammatory synovitis that often progresses to destruction of the articular cartilage and ankylosis of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can also produce diffuse inflammation in the lungs, pericardium, pleura, and sclera, and also nodular lesions, most common in subcutaneous tissue under the skin. Although the cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, autoimmunity plays a pivotal role in its chronicity and progression.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where as osteoarthritis is from ‘wear and tear’.

Arthritis (from Greek arthro-, joint + -itis, inflammation; plural: arthritides) is a group of conditions involving damage to the joints of the body.
There are over 100 different forms of arthritis[1]. The most common form, osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) is a result of trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, or age. Other arthritis forms are rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and autoimmune diseases in which the body attacks itself. Septic arthritis is caused by joint infection. Gouty arthritis is caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint, causing inflammation. There is also an uncommon form of gout caused by the formation of rhomboid crystals of calcium pyrophosphate. This gout is known as pseudogout.

About 1% of the world’s population is afflicted by rheumatoid arthritis, women three times more often than men. Onset is most frequent between the ages of 40 and 50, but people of any age can be affected. It can be a disabling and painful condition, which can lead to substantial loss of functioning and mobility. It is diagnosed chiefly on symptoms and signs, but also with blood tests (especially a test called rheumatoid factor) and X-rays. Diagnosis and long-term management are typically performed by a rheumatologist, an expert in the diseases of joints and connective tissues.[1]
Various treatments are available. Non-pharmacological treatment includes physical therapy, orthoses and occupational therapy. Analgesia (painkillers) and anti-inflammatory drugs, including steroids, are used to suppress the symptoms, while disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are often required to inhibit or halt the underlying immune process and prevent long-term damage. In recent times, the newer group of biologics has increased treatment options.[1]
The name is based on the term "rheumatic fever", an illness which includes joint pain and is derived from the Greek word rheumatos ("flowing"). The suffix -oid ("resembling") gives the translation as joint inflammation that resembles rheumatic fever. The first recognized description of rheumatoid arthritis was made in 1800 by Dr Augustin Jacob Landré-Beauvais (1772-1840) of Paris.[2]
Seems to me like arthritis is just the general generic term where as Rheumatoid is a TYPE of arthritis and there are obviously many different types as well. There actually was a list.
There are many different types of arthritis and these are just some of the more commonly heard of. Osteoarthritis is a disorder when the joints get inflamed by most often age and bone density too. Rheumatoid Arthritis is totally different. It’s a class of auto immune disorders when the body actually attacks itself, in this case the cartilage between the joints and destroys it leaving bone on bone. Allot of times people with this end up having knee and/or hip replacements as the weight bearing joints are hit the hardest too. There will be many different answers for this, but webmd.com can help you more in lay terms where wikipedia is allot more involved with the more medical terminology most laypersons don’t fully understand. Check them both out if you want. Good luck and God Bless
Arthritis is a general term, used to describe more than 100 different diseases, which typically cause joint inflammation and discomfort. However, some types of arthritis can cause skin problems and other non-joint related complications.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a specific type of arthritis.
While there are more than 100 different kinds of arthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis make up most of the reported cases.
